The first new sunscreen active in more than 25 years opens a new chapter in protection, formulation freedom, and public skin health.
Released By dsm-firmenich
August 3, 2026
By: Dr. Jochen Klock, Sr. Director Global Regulatory Affairs, Beauty & CareTina Vogt, Director Global Marketing, Sun CareCarl D’Ruiz, Sr. Business Development Manager, North America, dsm-firmenich
For decades, the U.S. sun care market has been shaped as much by limitation as by innovation. While consumer expectations have evolved dramatically on favoring products that are lighter, more elegant, more effective, and better aligned with modern health and beauty routines, the palette of approved sunscreen actives has remained relatively narrow. This reality has constrained what brands could create, how formulators can innovate, and ultimately what American consumers can experience.
“We applaud FDA for advancing this long-awaited decision and will continue our work with the agency and policymakers to build a more efficient, modern process that keeps pace with innovation while maintaining the highest standards of safety and effectiveness.” —Tom Myers, President & CEO, Personal Care Products Council

With FDA approval of PARSOL® Shield, dsm-firmenich is bringing to the U.S. market the first new sunscreen active in more than 25 years, opening the door to a new era of sun protection defined by advanced performance, greater formulation flexibility, and a more contemporary consumer experience. This launch matters because sunscreen is no longer just a seasonal essential or a basic over-the-counter category. It now sits at the intersection of public health, skin longevity, beauty, and daily well-being.
Consumers are increasingly aware that sun exposure does more than cause sunburn – it contributes to skin cancer risk, accelerates visible aging, and drives cumulative skin damage over time. At the same time, consumers expect products that fit seamlessly into their lives. Products that feel good on skin, work across diverse skin tones, layer well with existing routines, and provide confidence and reassurance through both science and wearability.
PARSOL® Shield arrives at this exact moment, when the market is ready for a sunscreen active that can support both elevated protection and elevated product design.
As Parand Salmassinia, President, Beauty & Care at dsm-firmenich, puts it: “PARSOL® Shield represents an important step forward not only for dsm-firmenich, but for the future of sun protection in the U.S. This milestone reflects years of scientific leadership, regulatory collaboration, and commitment to bringing meaningful innovation to consumers.” That quote captures the scope of the moment. This is not simply a product approval. It is the culmination of years of work to help move U.S. sun care toward a more modern standard and reflects where science, consumer needs, and the global market already are.
What makes this milestone especially significant is the path taken to reach it. PARSOL® Shield did not enter the U.S. market through a legacy or simplified pathway. Rather, its approval reflects years of scientific substantiation, rigorous regulatory preparation, and direct engagement with the FDA on their modernized review standards. Importantly, the regulatory strategy was entirely conceived and executed in-house by dsm-firmenich, under the leadership of Industry Regulatory Affairs experts Jochen Klock and Carl D’Ruiz, underscoring the company´s distinctive capability to independently navigate complex approval pathways.
The company conducted the first Maximal Usage Trial under the FDA’s updated guidelines and submitted the first OTC Tier 1 Monograph Order Request of its kind to support the inclusion of this active. That positions PARSOL® Shield in a category of its own: not just a new filter, but a regulatory trailblazer helping to establish the framework for future innovation may.
That distinction is important because regulation in the U.S. has long been one of the defining barriers to sunscreen innovation. Outside the U.S., formulators have had access to a broader range of UV filters, along with greater flexibility to create products that align with evolving consumer demands. In contrast, the U.S. market has often lagged behind global developments, leaving brands to work with a more limited toolkit.
This gap has had practical consequences: fewer formulation options, increased trade-offs, and slower progress toward sunscreen textures and user experiences that consumers increasingly expect. PARSOL® Shield helps close that gap—not only by entering the market, but by signaling that the U.S. can once again be a place where advanced sun care innovation is possible.
Dr. Jochen Klock, Director, Global Regulatory Affairs, Beauty & Care, puts that shift in perspective: “This approval closes a longstanding innovation gap in the U.S. sunscreen market and establishes a modern scientific and regulatory benchmark for what advanced sun protection can look like.” His point goes beyond the technicalities of regulatory success. It speaks to a broader industry reset. PARSOL® Shield is not only entering the market as a new approved active; it is doing so as a proof point that stronger scientific pathways, modern safety standards, and commercially relevant innovation can coexist within the U.S. regulatory environment.
“The Skin Cancer Foundation applauds the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approving bemotrizinol [PARSOL® Shield] for use in the American market. The rigor involved in approving a new sunscreen active ingredient is no easy feat, but continued innovation in sun protection is critical and this work is important. We congratulate dsm-firmenich for its dedication to bringing this filter stateside. Nearly 90 percent of all skin cancers are preventable with a complete sun protection strategy, but American adoption of sun-safety practices is low. We need to do everything we can to help improve American sun protection behaviors.” Said Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation.
From a formulation standpoint, the appeal of PARSOL® Shield is clear. It is positioned as a highly efficient broadband UVB/UVA filter with strong performance even at low concentrations. It contributes to broad-spectrum protection, supports photostability, and offers compatibility with both organic and inorganic filters.
“The FDA announcement follows longstanding and ongoing advocacy by the American Academy of Dermatology Association. The AADA believes this approval marks an important public health step by expanding access to safe and effective sunscreens for consumers in the United States and helping save the lives of Americans from skin cancer, one of the most preventable cancers.”
—American Academy of Dermatology President Murad Alam, MD, MCSI, MBA, FAAD
These attributes are highly meaningful for R&D teams: Efficiency at lower concentrations can reduce overall formulation burden, while strong compatibility can simplify formulation design. Its contribution to broad-spectrum performance enables brands to deliver the high-level protection expected by both consumers and regulators.
Together, these properties provide a more versatile and future-ready foundation for product development.
Just as importantly, PARSOL® Shield supports the aesthetic dimension of sunscreen formulation. In beauty and personal care, performance alone is no longer enough—products also need to feel right. Heavy textures, whitening, oiliness, and other negative sensory cues can become barriers to daily use, no matter how effective a formula may be on paper.
This is where PARSOL® Shield becomes particularly relevant for brands looking to lead the next generation of sun care. Its profile enables lighter, smoother, more elegant sunscreen textures which are exactly the kinds of qualities that can enhance consumer compliance and make daily SPF more achievable. When consumers enjoy using sunscreen, they are more likely to apply it consistently. That is not just a sensorial win—It is a public health win.
“As a board-certified dermatologist and now a physician-legislator, I understand the critical role sunscreen plays in preventing melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.…” said Congressman John Joyce, M.D. “With bipartisan support, I was proud to advance the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act to ensure that the FDA quickly approves new sunscreen ingredients. The approval of this new sunscreen filter marks an important step forward in expanding access to innovative sun protection and helping Americans better protect themselves from harmful UV exposure.”
Tina Vogt, Director, Global Marketing Sun Care, speaks directly to that connection between consumer expectation and brand opportunity: “Today’s consumers expect more from sunscreens like high protection, beautiful aesthetics on skin, and textures they actually want to wear every day. PARSOL® Shield helps brands deliver all three.” That insight is crucial for marketers and business leaders alike. The premiumization of sun care is not only about higher SPF numbers or stronger claims; it is about delight, ease, trust, and integration into everyday life. Products that perform clinically but fail emotionally or experientially will increasingly struggle. Products that combine strong protection with elegance and usability have the chance to reshape the category.
This is where PARSOL® Shield becomes more than the sum of its technical feature—it becomes a strategic growth opportunity for brands. Global consumer demand is increasingly shifting toward multifunctional, seamless, sensorially pleasing sun protection that integrates naturally into skin care, makeup, and wellbeing-driven daily routines.
Marketing teams are under pressure to tell stories that are both credible and aspirational. R&D teams are under pressure to build formulas that satisfy regulatory, functional, and experiential demands at once. Leadership teams, in turn, are focused on identifying meaningful innovation platforms with genuine business impact.
PARSOL® Shield sits at the intersection of all three. It offers a science-backed platform upon which brands can build differentiated product stories, enhanced consumer experiences, and stronger long-term market positions.
For U.S. brands specifically, the commercial implications are significant. Carl D’Ruiz, MPH, Sr. Business Development Manager, Beauty & Care North America, captures that clearly: “For U.S. brands, this is more than a regulatory milestone. It is a commercial and formulation opportunity to lead with a modern UV filter that answers real consumer needs while accelerating innovation.” That is exactly the right framing. PARSOL® Shield is not simply relevant because it is the first in decades—It is relevant because it enables a more advanced product vision: one that aligns protection with beauty expectations, compliance with creativity, and science with business growth.
Another key advantage lies in global harmonization. PARSOL® Shield is already established in multiple regions and can support the development of more globally aligned sunscreen formulations. For multinational brands and development teams, this is enormously important.
Fragmented regional requirements often complicate innovation pipelines, forcing companies to redesign products market by market rather than building from a more unified strategy. A UV filter that supports broader global alignment can help simplify development, reduce formulation complexity, and accelerate speed to market.
In a competitive category where timing, consistency, and cost efficiency all matter, that strategic benefit should not be underestimated.
PARSOL® Shield also aligns with the broader movement toward more responsible and future-fit formulation choices. It is positioned as having a strong eco-profile, with benefits closely tied to the growing demand for conscious, next-generation sunscreen formulations. That matters because sustainability expectations are increasingly influencing not only consumer perception, but also retailer scrutiny, brand strategy, and long-term portfolio planning. In this context, PARSOL® Shield offers more than immediate performance benefits—it helps brands build products that are better aligned with the future direction of the category.
At the same time, the public health aspect behind the ingredient gives it unusual depth and credibility. dsm-firmenich has consistently linked PARSOL® Shield to a larger commitment around skin cancer prevention, public skin health advocacy, and partnerships such as Destination Healthy Skin with The Skin Cancer Foundation. The company presents this approval not as an isolated regulatory or commercial event, but as one part of a larger effort to expand access to better sun protection and help address the burden of UV-related skin damage in the U.S. consumers. In a category where trust is paramount, that sense of purpose becomes a powerful differentiator.
We need to do everything we can to help improve American sun protection behaviors.”
—Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation
The substantiation behind the launch further strengthens its credibility. Clinical studies involving nearly 500 participants – reflecting the diversity of the U.S. population – demonstrated exceptional UV efficacy, excellent tolerability, an excellent safety profile, and extremely low systemic absorption.
These are powerful validation points, particularly in a market where safety and efficacy expectations are closely scrutinized.
For brand teams, this level of substantiation enhances product storytelling. For regulatory and technical teams, it reinforces confidence. And for consumers—even if they never see the underlying data directly—it contributes to a more trustworthy and robust end product.
Ultimately, what makes PARSOL® Shield so important is that it answers the right questions for this moment in U.S. beauty and personal care. How do we bring more advanced sun care to market in a way that feels modern, premium, and desirable? How do we support stronger protection without accepting old compromises in texture and aesthetics? How do we help consumers adopt healthier habits? And how do brands position themselves not just as followers of change, but as leaders in it?
PARSOL® Shield provides the industry with a compelling answer to each of these questions.
It also arrives at a moment of strong symbolic timing. Consumer expectations have evolved. Scientific capabilities have advanced. The global sunscreen conversation has matured. Now, the U.S. market has the opportunity to evolve alongside them.
For marketers, PARSOL® Shield offers a powerful narrative of innovation, trust, public health relevance, and elevated product performance. For formulators, it unlocks new creative and technical freedom. For business leaders, it represents a genuine competitive opportunity—one with the potential to reshape portfolios, strengthen brand positioning, and capture demand from consumers who expect more from their daily SPF.
In the end, PARSOL® Shield is not merely the arrival of a new approved active—it signals the arrival of a new mindset for U.S. sun care: one that views advanced protection, elegant formulation, and public skin health as interconnected rather than separate ambitions. That is what makes this such a pivotal moment. The brands that recognize its significance earliest will not simply benefit from a new ingredient – they will help define the next chapter of the American sunscreen market.
PARSOL® Shield is here. And with it, a new era of U.S. sun care begins.
